SBTDC Relocates to PORTAL

The relocation of the Charlotte regional office of the Small Business and Technology Development Center to the UNC Charlotte PORTAL Building concentrates University-affiliated entrepreneurial support services in a state-of-the-art facility. Formerly located in the Ben Craig Center at University Research Park, the SBTDC officially opened in PORTAL, Jan. 2.

"PORTAL opened in early 2014 to serve as the region’s focal point for commercial collaboration among entrepreneurs, corporations, academic researchers, and our students," said Robert Wilhelm, vice chancellor for research and economic development at UNC Charlotte. "The SBTDC resources will add to the vibrant scene that already includes the Ventureprise incubator and special events such as the 2014 Charlotte Venture Challenge."

The UNC Charlotte SBTDC is led by George McAllister, and currently includes five business counselors with broad business expertise. In 2014, they provided assistance to more than 800 small- and mid-sized companies in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties.

Registration for Camps on Campus Begins on Jan. 27

UNC Charlotte's Camps on Campus offers children and young people the opportunity to join scientists, researchers, educators, writers, and actors in the creative atmosphere of a university campus. Camp offerings this year include JEDI LegoTM engineering, musical theatre, Minecraft, and smart art.

Families will notice something new this year when registering their children for the Camps on Campus program – the Niner Character Promise. In an effort to enhance Camps on Campus's culture of friendship, inclusion, and good citizenship, the camps staff created the Niner Character Promise. The new honor code encourages participants to treat fellow campers and staff with kindness, respect and cooperation in their words and actions; to seek help from others in resolving conflicts; and to respect the property of the University and others.

Last summer, nearly 1,000 children participated in Camps on Campus. Public registration begins at 8:00 AM on January 27. Visit the Camps on Campus website for more information.
