Writing Resources Center
Frequently Asked Questions

Who can visit the Writing Center?

Any UNC Charlotte student can receive writing assistance in the WRC. You may visit the center for help with all papers, not just for those required for Writing Intensive and Composition classes.

What is the charge for Writing Resources Center services?

They are FREE! Tuition covers the cost of all WRC services, so you pay no additional fees when you visit the center.

Is it necessary to have an appointment to visit the WRC?

For guaranteed availability it is best to make an appointment ahead of time because the services in the writing center are heavily used. Call 704.687.HELP or stop by Fretwell 220 to make an appointment. It is possible to get a walk-in appointment from time to time, but there is no guarantee one will be available when you need it. Walk-in appointments result when students forfeit appointments by being more than 10 minutes late for a meeting with a tutor.

How long do writing tutorial sessions last?

Writing tutorials normally last 50 minutes; however, sessions may be shorter, depending on your needs.

Will my teacher be told I saw a WRC consultant?

Yes. Consultants fill out a report for each student who receives writing assistance in the center and sends the report to the appropriate faculty member.

How often can I make an appointment with a consultant?

You are allowed two appointments per week. However, to ensure that we serve all students fairly, you are only allowed one appointment per day.

What happens if I just don't show up for my scheduled appointment?

A missed appointment without cancellation places you in a “no show” file. After two no-shows, you are not eligible to make appointments for the rest of the semester. Then you must rely only on walk in opportunities. To ensure you get the help you need, when you need it, please cancel an appointment with as much notice as possible.

Who are the consultants in the Writing Center?

The majority of our consultants are English Department Graduate Teaching Assistants, but we also have some graduate and undergraduate tutors from other disciplines. All of our consultants are very knowledgeable about writing and receive extensive training in tutoring strategies.

Will tutors in the WRC "fix" my paper for me?

Writing center consultants will not simply correct your errors. They will, however, teach you to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your own writing process. Their goal is to help you become a better writer, not just to improve the quality of a specific paper.
