The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and the
John S. & James L. Knight Foundation are teaming to offer journalists in
the Charlotte region a series of seminars over the next three years on
the changing nature of growth and open space reporting. These aspects of
environmental journalism are an increasing part of regional news media
coverage as the Piedmont region’s rapid growth brings land use,
development, and open space issues to the fore. These issues are also
increasingly related to other civic issues, such as health, schools, the
economy, crime, and taxes. These seminars will provide regional
journalists with opportunities to examine these challenges with experts,
explore story ideas, and gain access to a wealth of environmental
journalism resources.

Regional Growth & Open Space Survey
As part of a three-year program of
seminars for journalists on growth and open space funded by the John S.
and James L. Knight Foundation, the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute
conducted a public opinion survey from late March through August, 2006.
Preliminary results from the survey were presented to journalists
attending the September 22, 2006 “Reporting on Growth and Open Space”
seminar. An executive summary and the full report are now
available for review and downloading, along with county by county
results.
A brief
description of the survey’s purpose, design, and methodology is
also available for viewing and downloading.
