Supporting UCF |
|
History United Christian Fellowship started in 1963 as the first campus ministry at Charlotte. It was directed by Loy Witherspoon and was established as a joint Presbyterian and Methodist campus ministry. Over the years the NC Lutheran Synod and the NC Episcopal Diocese asked for a complete merger of the four denominations on campus. Our excellence in student ministry is built on the generous spirit of our denominations and supporters just like you. Every gift to UCF, large or small, symbolizes a commitment to the importance of student ministry at UNC Charlotte. We invite you to join us in redefining campus ministry for the next generation.
Identity Theft—Don’t be Fooled UNC Charlotte has five nationally recognized campus ministries in addition to UCF: Catholic, Baptist, Intervarsity, Campus Crusade for Christ, and Reformed University Fellowship. However our campus is plagued with nearly 25 fly-by-night groups. The six campus ministries that are nationally recognized are held accountable, while the others have no visible signs of accountability. Many of their leaders are not trained theologically nor have any formal ordination. Nonetheless, they operate freely on campus often to the detriment of our students, the community and to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Why are there so many? Some exist because they simply are outreach arms of local non-denominational churches. Some exist because they are splinter groups of existing campus ministries. It’s simply too hard to tell why some exist. 25 or more of these locally based campus ministries surely tell the story of the division of the church. Every church in Charlotte has been or is at risk of being approached to support these ministries financially. If you are approached by anyone seeking funds for campus ministry, at any campus, we suggest the following: verify their legitimacy with the denominational headquarters! Simple enough.
UCF’s Accountability As the official and only campus ministry of the Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA), Presbyterian (USA) United Methodist, UCF must adhere to a higher Christian ethic. Our purpose is clear and straightforward: To help students live life to the full, connecting them with God, with one another, and with awesome faith experiences. In the 2007 national quadrennial review of our campus ministry, UCF was declared “a model campus ministry.” We owe such a declaration to you as “model supporters.” |
