FAQ What faith opportunities are available to me at UNC Charlotte? Charlotte has over 30 campus ministries. Most are part of a church near campus who’s goal it is to increase Sunday worship. Some have other agendas. There are only a handful of nationally recognized campus ministries. Some are fine, but UNC Charlotte has experienced some destructive religious groups. UCF is the campus ministry where everyone is welcome and where everyone is glad. We have something for all kinds of students. Just-Worship on Tuesdays, Wednesday dinners, small groups & Bible studies, retreats, and incredible mission trips:
Worship We hope you will join us for worship every Tuesday in the College of Education Bldg. which is at the heart of campus down the hill from the SAC and across from the new Student Union. The worship is called Just-Worship and it begins at 8pm starting Tuesday August 26. We always have free food before and after. Learn more.
Wednesday Dinner We offer a free dinner to students across the street from campus at our student center, located just south of the main entrance at Advent Lutheran Church. The dinner happens every Wednesday at 6:30pm followed by a laid back but powerful program. Learn more.
Fall Retreat Our annual fall retreat is incredible! Not only is a good weekend away, it is simply the best way to make life-long friends. It happens the weekend after Labor Day, September 5-7. It costs $50, but if you need financial help, just let us know and we can find a way. Learn more.
Mission Trips & Service Projects We offer more ways to put your beliefs to work than any other program at UNC Charlotte. Our Fall Break Mission Trip to New York City, Spring Break trip to Mexico, and our Summer Break Mission to the Rocky Mountains are all great. We also have UNC Charlotte’s only Disaster Response Team. You can be a first responder too. We are currently building our very own Habitat House and we have a summer internship program in the Rocky Mountains. Learn more.

What are some signs of a destructive religious group? The religious group is a cult when its leader claims be to God. But most cults like this don’t operate so openly at UNC Charlotte and you probably don’t have to worry about these. But, there are destructive practices which include: judging more than caring; attempts at controlling you; becoming dependent on the leader or group; isolating you from friends or family not in the group; and general mind-control. But typically the first sign is some kind of subtle prohibition against critical thinking, reasoning, or doubting.
Are there Christian professors at UNC Charlotte? UNC Charlotte, with 23,000 students has a huge faculty representing all faiths. Some of your professors will be Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc. Some will be atheist and some will be agnostic. But there are a good number of Christian professors at UNC Charlotte as well. Many professors feel uncomfortable expressing their spiritual views in class. Many professors and top university administrators are very strong Christians and supporters of UCF. Get to know your professors!
Who are the preachers at the Belk Tower? The Belk Tower is a free speech zone which protects are constitutional rights. On occasion you will see political protests, controversial displays, and traveling preachers. Brother Micah and Preacher Gary are regular visitors. They travel across the nation and are not affiliated with any ministry on campus (that we know of). They often preach hate. This hate speech usually gets a big crowd and Christians defending their faith start acting very un-Christ like. We speculate that bullhorn style preachers simply have some unmet psychological needs and they thrive off of the controversy. Most often, their speech does not reflect sound Biblical doctrine.
How safe is UNC Charlotte? Like any urban campus, UNC Charlotte experiences criminal activity. Just be smart and practice safe steps on and off campus. The university does have an emergency response director and system in place in the event of a tragic event.
How do I have a healthy faith at UNC Charlotte, a secular college? Well, it’s not easy. It will take a lot more work than what it did in high school. But you can stay strong and focus on God and God’s will if you try.
Get involved with UCF UCF is just a great way to not only worship and pray, but also to make friends, have a good time and be open and honest. At UCF not everyone believes in the same things, but we believe in each other and have an amazing time. UCF has helped many of us to get through this jungle. If you have an idea for something to do to make your faith experience at UNC Charlotte better let us know. Everything we do as a campus ministry was student originated, so we are open to your suggestions and leadership.
Do Devotionals At Just-Worship we usually have an ongoing series and you can use these ideas to study and pray throughout the week. You can also do devotionals by reading a good book, devotional guide, taking some time for a walk in the sun praying and contemplating, listening to Christian music on your iPod while at the treadmill, etc.
Take a Stand If someone is putting you down, it might be best to keep your cool and listen. But if someone is putting someone else down or just being unethical, take a stand and help someone else. You’ll feel better and you’ll know that you are making a small step in making this a better world.
Ask for Help Steve Cheyney is our campus pastor and is available when you need to talk. He also has a good number of friends in the area that can help too. He knows professors, counselors, and other pastors that can be brought in to help you solve your biggest problems.
What is church life like in Charlotte? Considering UNC Charlotte has many local students you will learn of a great variety of worship across town. Charlotte has small rural-like churches, family style medium size churches, larger active churches, and mega churches. University City United Methodist, Mallard Creek Presbyterian , and Advent Lutheran would be considered the flagship churches of the university area. The closest Episcopal parish is a good 8 miles from campus, but some make it worth the drive, St. Peter’s, for example. Christ Lutheran, Christ Episcopal, and Myers Park Methodist & Presbyterian churches would be considered the flagship churches of the city. There are several non-traditional churches including The Well, The Portico, Good Shepherd, and Church of the Beloved. So many to choose from. Learn more.
