Introduction to Comparative Politics

Finding Useful Information on the World Wide Web: A Brief Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to introduce you to some sites on the World Wide Web (WWW) that either contain useful information for students of comparative politics or can direct you to useful information. I want to stress that this guide is in no way comprehensive. The number of sites is growing so fast that it is impossible to keep up with it all. What I can say is that I have found each of the sites below useful.

Starting Points

Hauss Text Companion Web Site
This site is designed to support your text book by offering country-specific updates as well as links to other relevant sites.

Comparative Politics Links Page
This site, located on UNCC's server, is maintained by Frada Mozenter of the Library's Reference Staff. This page was prepared to list links of use to students in comparative politics.

Comparative Politics Links from St. Martin's Press
An extensive list of links prepared and maintained by a commerical book publisher.

General Country Information

The following three sites provide a gateway to general information about just about every country in the world. All of them can also be reached from the Comparative Politics Links Page.

CIA World Factbook
This site, maintained by the CIA, contains basic information on the political institutions, economy, and geography for each of the world's independent countries.

State Department's Background Notes
These entries provide a fuller treatment of a country's history and current political and economic situation than the World Fact Book. However, some entries are a bit dated. This site is the gateway. You need to select a region and then the specific country.

Area Handbooks
This series, once coordinated by the U.S. Army, is now managed by the Library of Congress. These handbooks are book-length surveys of politics, economic, history, and geography. Handbook are currently available for 85 countries around the world.

More Specialized Information

Governments on the WWW
This site emphasizes links to official web sites of governments (ministries, embassies, tourist offices, etc.)

Elections Around the World
This site, maintained by Wilfried Dirksen, focuses on election results from around the world. Country results are stored alphabetically. Another nice feature are the useful links to other politically-oriented sites at the end of each country's page.

Parties on the Net
Another site maintained by Wilfried Dirksen. This one contains links to political parties around the world that offer web sites.

Legislatures on the Net
A third web site developed by Wilfried Dirksen. The focus here is on national legislatures that have web sites.

Freedom House
Each year Freedom house ranks the courties of the world on the the extent of political rights.  This web site contains a link to the latest country rankings.

Links to Media

Many print media outlets (newspapers, news magazines, news wire services) have web sites as well. One starting points are the links on the Comparative Politics Links Page Others are:

The New York Times
Not only do I think that the New York Times is the best overall newspaper in the US, but once you register (free in the US) you can conduct searches for articles on any topic (though retreival is no longer free).

E&P Guide to Online Newspapers
This site contains a comprehensive directory of newspapers around the world that have web pages. Provides an opportunity to find out how newspapers in your country are reporting the news.

Search Engines and Other Reference Tools

If the sites already listed do not connect you to the information you are looking for, another strategy is to use a search engine. As the name suggests, a search engine searches the WWW for those sites that contain the word(s) or phrase(s) you are looking for. There is an art to using search engines as poorly formulated search requests can produce a listing of thousands of sites of dubious value. The Reference Librarians maintain a roster of links to the most popular search engines: Alta Vista, Yahoo, Lycos, and several more.

Ebsco Host
Another route entirely is to use an on-line indexing service. These services maintain databases of articles that can be searched by key words. Ebsoc Host contain many useful indexes, especially Academic Search Elite (for academic journal articles) and Newspaper Source for newspaper articles.  In some cases you can read complete articles on-line; in others, only an abstract. Note that this service is only available from machines located on campus.
