Week of Welcome (WOW) 2010 is an opportunity for the whole campus to celebrate the start of a new academic year. Started in 1998, WOW has grown and evolved to be a free, 10-day event that highlights more than 50 campus-sponsored and led programs.

Offices within the divisions of Students Affairs and Academic Affairs reach out to the campus community to help educate incoming 49ers about available services. A variety of social opportunities is offered during WOW, too. This year’s events, from Friday, Aug. 20, through Sunday, Aug. 29, are all focused around the 2010 theme of “Welcome Home 49ers!”

“While all WOW events are open to members of the campus community, we are particularly interested in seeing faculty, staff and their families at the 49er New Year,” said Shannon Calega, assistant director of new student services. This event will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22, at the Belk Track and Field Complex. Other WOW events include RecFest; Wow! Video Block Party; Comedy Show; and Support Yourself: Know Your Resources and NOW Welcome Back Carnival, hosted by Niners on the Weekend.

In addition, a free concert featuring headliners Alpha Theory and acts including Sugar Glyder will take place Saturday, Aug. 28, in Halton Arena. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the concert is open to the general public.

To help with WOW 2010, 95 student volunteers, known as WOW leaders and five student mentors, known as team leaders, were selected through an application and interview process.

According to Calega, they will provide assistance throughout the week to the individual events as well as help welcome new students, faculty and staff to the campus. “These students are strong UNC Charlotte leaders who are excited about the opportunity to give back to the campus community.”
