Petra Solar chief technology officer Johan Enslin is the new director of UNC Charlotte's Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC).
EPIC will occupy a $76 million building, now under construction, where it will train engineers and research technologies for the Charlotte region's growing energy industry. UNC Charlotte’s civil, environmental, electrical and computer engineering departments will be housed in the new building.
Petra Solar, based in New Jersey, and UNC Charlotte also formed a collaborative agreement for technology exchange and intellectual property development.
Students will also work in EPIC labs with professionals from Duke Energy, Siemens Energy, Shaw, Areva and other energy companies. Duke and Siemens recently announced $8.8 million in support for EPIC.
Enslin’s nearly 30-year career is marked with leadership activities in industry and universities in the U.S., Europe and South Africa. He served as an executive and consultant for private business operations and as a professor in electrical and electronic engineering.
Outgoing director Steve Patterson will return to his role as SPX Distinguished Professor in mechanical engineering at UNC Charlotte.
