The academic life of the University provides students with intellectual and professional skills to prepare them for productive lives in a global, knowledge-based economy. To get ready for careers after graduation, undergraduate students should seek opportunities to gain valuable job-related experience through options such as internships or cooperative learning.
According to research by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, internships are becoming more important to prospective employers. The association’s surveys indicated companies increasingly rely upon their own internship programs to identify full-time hires, and virtually all employers want their incoming employees to have some kind of relevant work experience, such as an internship.
“Students from any major and class level who hope for a similar increase in marketability to future employers should explore internships and other experiential learning opportunities available through our office,” said Rebecca Cody, senior assistant director for publicity and outreach at the University Career Center.
Cody noted that the Career Center’s post-graduation survey of the Class of 2009 supported the same findings of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Graduates who gained career-related experience through experiential learning were more likely to be:
- Employed before graduation
- Working in career fields related to their major
- Satisfied with their current employment
- Earning a higher salary
The University Career Center offers assistance to students to prepare for future careers, including resume critiques and job fairs held throughout the academic year. The center’s Career Resource Library also has information for locating internships and future employment.
