The Venture program turned 40 in 2010, but there won’t be any black balloons at their birthday party; instead, it felt more like old home week when over 70 friends and family members reunited for fun, festivities and camaraderie. The anniversary festivities took place Memorial Day weekend.

The program, which offers outdoor education and experiences for members of the campus community as well as the community at large, got its start in 1970 after a group from UNC Charlotte returned from an Outward Bound course.

There are so many parts of this job that I love. I get to be my whole self here.
- Sandy Kohn, director of Venture

Coupling the want to explore different ways to reach students with the lessons learned from Outward Bound, Venture was born.

Sandy Kohn, the current director of Venture, said, “There are so many parts of this job that I love. I get to be my whole self here. The most important thing, though, is making a real difference in people’s lives.”
