UNC Charlotte celebrates Campus Sustainability Week Monday, Oct. 29, through Friday, Nov. 2, 2012. Several free events are planned offering students, faculty and staff lots of opportunities to learn about campus green initiatives and how to participate in these efforts.
The week’s anchor event, the Bi-Annual Campus Cleanup, will be held from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Belk Tower and CHHS Plaza. "The Campus Cleanup was designed for one purpose," said Devin Hatley, environmental educator for the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. "It’s one of many opportunities for everyone in the campus community to give back and show commitment to the land, the University and its mission."
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois has authorized 90 minutes of release time for all faculty and staff members who are interested in volunteering in the Campus Clean Up.
The week-long schedule includes:
- Travel Green Information Fair – 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Tuesday, Oct. 30. Includes a bike repair / information booth, details on how to register bikes with Police and Public Safety and information about on-campus shuttles, CATS routes and Hertz Connect cars.
- Bi-Annual Campus Cleanup – 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Wednesday, Oct. 31, Belk Tower and CHHS Plaza.
- Tour of EPIC, a LEED Gold certified building – 2:00 PM, Thursday and Friday, Nov. 1 - 2. Participants can learn about the innovative energy- and water-saving initiatives, along with the LEED program. Space is limited; please click here to email RSVPs.
- Climate Action Plan Presentation – 10:30 AM, Friday, Nov. 2, Cone University Center 112. UNC Charlotte’s sustainability coordinator will outline this first plan aimed at reducing the campus’ greenhouse gas emissions.
Facilities Management’s Sustainability and Recycling Office, along with the Office of Parking and Transportation Services, UNC Charlotte Cyclists, Charlotte Green Initiative, Earth Club, the Police and Public Safety Department and CATS are cosponsoring Campus Sustainability Week.
