
Students' Reminders and PPOL Calendar:February 2006 February 23rd: As part of the Executive Leadership speaker series,
UNCC and the Belk College of Business will be hosting NC State Treasurer Richard
Moore on campus next week, on Wednesday, February 23rd. He will be speaking
from 3:00-4:00 in the Lucas Room of the Cone Center. All students and faculty
are invited, so I hope you will be able to take advantage of having a high-level
state official join us here who is responsible for over $70 billion in public

in place of the normal weekly student lunch. PPOL students Huiping Li and
Dustin Read will each present their paper that will be delivered at the South
Carolina Political Science Association meeting the following Saturday. PPOL
students are encouraged to attend in order to provide useful feedback to Huiping
and Dustin as they finalize their presentations. PPOL faculty will also be
invited to attend. Students are welcome to bring a lunch and join us at noon in
the political science conference room for this presentation. February 21st: The Center for Professional and Applied Ethics, in
partnership with the PPOL program, is hosting a luncheon/workshop on Tuesday,
February 21st from 12:00-2:30 in Cone 210. Joan E. Dubinsky, Esquire, Ethics
Officer with the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. will be the
speaker. Her presentation is entitled: "Ethics Leadership at the International
Monetary Fund: Finding Common Ground." February 15th: The PPOL partner Department of Criminal Justice is pleased to announce the following presentation for all faculty and students: Alex Piquero, “Do People Value Punishment More Than Rehabilitation? A Study of the Willingness to Pay for Rehabilitation and Incarceration of Juvenile Offenders.” This presentation will be on February 15, 2006 3-4:30, in 101 Cameron. All PPOL students are invited to attend. Alex R. Piquero is Professor of Criminology, Law & Society and Magid Term Professor in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Florida, Member of the National Consortium on Violence Research, and Member of the MacArthur Foundation's Research Network on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice. He is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed articles on topics related to criminological theory, criminal careers, and quantitative research methods. He is past recipient of the American Society of Criminology's Young Scholar Award, E-Mail Mentor of the Year Award, and the University of Florida College of Arts & Sciences Teacher of the Year Award. February 9th: The local ASPA chapter is hosting a lunch panel discussion on how public administrators can/should interact with the media. Lunch is free for members and $5 to nonmembers. Just RSVP to Christi Floyd at cfloyd@ci.charlotte.nc.us if you want in on the lunch. You can always bring your own, though. The panel will include former county manager Jerry Fox, current city manager Brian Hiatt, and current Observer reporter Richard Rubin. The discussion will be from 11:45 1:00 on Thursday, February 9th, at the Charlotte Fire Department, 228 E 9th St, Conf Rm 150. All PPOL students are invited. February 8 A candidate for assistant professor in the College of Health and Human Services, Stephen Borders, will be on campus Wednesday, February 8th for his campus interview. As part of that interview, he will be making a research presentation from his dissertation entitled “Transportation Barriers to Health Care: Assessing the Texas Medicaid Program and Beyond.” PPOL students are invited (and encouraged) to attend. The talk is scheduled for 2pm in Barnard 244.. February 3rd Friday morning are cancelled so students and faculty can attend the installation ceremony of the new chancellor. February 2. Thursday will be a lecture by Dr. Mark Clemens, Biology, 2005 Recipient, First Citizens Bank Scholar Medal in Cone 210 from noon until 1:00. This lecture is a part of the series of events to celebrate the installation of the new chancellor. February 1. Wednesday, Cone 210 from noon until 1:00 will be another lecture as a part of the series of events to celebrate the installation of the new chancellor by Professor Deb Ryan, Architecture, 2005 O. Max Gardner Nominee. February 1. Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government is sponsoring pre- and post-doctoral research fellowships. As I have stated previously, these are the kinds of fellowship opportunities you should be looking at by your second year in the program and competing for in your third as a means of funding your dissertation research or spring-boarding your career after graduation. Fellowships like these also add significant weight to your vitae for entering the job market.
