Current Update.PPOL Mini-Update 11-28-05 and addendum:PPOL Students: I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday break as we all gear up for the end-of-term push. I wanted to update you on a couple of items of interest, but I don’t have a “full update” at this time. Just some tidbits. The happiest news: Our own Dr. Tiffany Manuel gave birth to a beautiful baby boy (aka, future social scientist and policy analyst). His name is Madu Elijah Manuel Diop and he was born last Tuesday (Nov. 22nd). Mom, son, and dad are doing very well. So congrats to Tiffany and her family! 1. Tomorrow, November 29th, the Political Science Brown Bag scheduled for 3pm has been canceled. Instead, we will have the first candidate for the assistant professor of public administration position give her research presentation at 10:30am in the Political Science conference room. The focus will be on the use of network analysis in nonprofit and government collaborations. Again, these are a good opportunity to see the candidates on the proverbial hot seat as well as what is usually some very good research. Kelly LeRoux is finishing her dissertation at Wayne State University in Detroit and has already expressed a great deal of interest in the PPOL program (in addition to the MPA program). There will be additional candidate presentations over the next two weeks that I will let you know about once those schedules have been finalized.
2. This Friday, December 2nd, the PPOL Seminar will host
four student paper presentations by students that will be shortly presenting or
recently presented at policy conferences. All PPOL students are invited to
attend and I will be inviting all PPOL faculty to join us as well. The
presentations will begin about 3:30 in Colvard 3066.
4. On Tuesday, December 6th, the University has a special guest coming to make a
presentation that PPOL students will find very interesting. The Under Secretary
for Science and Technology in the US Dept. of Homeland Security, Dr. Charles
McQueary, will be speak in Cone 210 from 10-11am. Dr. McQueary leads the
research and development arm of the Department, utilizing the nation's
scientific and technological resources to provide federal, state and local
officials with the technology and capabilities to protect the homeland. This
presentation is policy in action and I hope you all will make a point to afford
yourselves the opportunity to attend. If you plan to attend, please let Beverly
Guessford know. She can be reached at 687-3260 or at
bguessfo@email.uncc.edu.
