1—Qualifying Exams Schedule
For those of you wondering about the qualifying exams, they will take place
on these dates in August. The first exam will be Economics from 8am to 2pm
on Monday, August 14th (the committee being Schwartz, Russo, Wang, Manuel,
and Kalafsky). The format is expected to be four questions (two focused on
Econ 1 materials and two focused on Econ 2 materials), of which you will
need to answer three.
The second exam will be the quant exam on Wednesday, August 18th from 8am to
5pm (the committee being Bjerregaard, Whitmeyer, and Manuel). Questions will
focus on stats 1m stats 2 and a program evaluation question. You will be
using data sets to answer these questions.
The final qualifying exam will be the policy field exam. Students will be
able to pick up this exam in person on Friday, August 18th after 9am. The
exam will be due by 9am on Monday morning, August 21st. The committee is
Leland, Campbell, Manuel, and me. We expect the format to have three
sections of two questions each. Students will need to answer one question
from each section. The sections will cover research methods, applied policy,
and policy theory. The committee is continuing to discuss whether each
question will be equally weighted.
The location for the econ and quant exams is still being worked out and will
be included in a later update, along with any changes in the format. If you
have questions on any of this, please don’t hesitate to let me know. And my
thanks to Sat Ananda for organizing a series of meetings with the students
and professors in preparation for the exams.
2—ASPA Chapter to Tour BoA Stadium
The second Thursday of each month is the ASPA chapter meeting which PPOL
students are invited (and encouraged to attend). For the July meeting, we
will be touring the Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL Panthers.
Here’s the official announcement:

at 11:30 a.m. and end approximately 12:30 p.m. Only 25
people will be able to participate, so please RSVP to Nick Swartz via e-mail
as soon as possible (njswartz@email.uncc.edu).
There is no cost for parking; however, you must enter and park in the lot
located off Morehead Street.
For those interested in carpooling:
Please arrive at our regular meeting place (Fire Department Admin) – located

give ourselves enough time for arrival and check-in.
Lunch will not be served for this meeting.
3—Governing.com
I have been a long-time subscriber to Governing magazine, which is a
practitioner-oriented monthly magazine that addresses a number of policy and
managerial issues that confront local, state, and federal officials
frequently. They have a web site that you can join for daily updates of
issues in the news that is germane to issues of governance across the
nation, the cities, and the state governments. It’s a useful resource to
stay abreast of what’s happening outside our own backyard here in Charlotte
(and it’s free).
4—Ethics Paper Competition

5—Fellowships at UNCC
Just a reminder that the UNCC Grad School home page lists several fellowship
opportunities available through the university. These are worth examining if
you are looking for alternative funding sources that would provide support
like a Grad Assistantship, but without the requirement to have to work in
exchange for the stipend.
A listing of opportunities is available at:
http://www.uncc.edu/gradmiss/gs_funding_and_fellowships.html
6—Internships and Fellowships
For the younger students in the program that have limited professional
experience, here are some additional resources available for tracking down
internship and other fellowship opportunities to round out your education.
These might be of particular interest for planning for next summer. Such
activities need to planned in advance in order to not interfere with time in
the program towards graduation.
