2—HSR Director Candidate Presentation

The Ph.D. in Health Services Research is currently looking to hire a new program director.  One of the candidates for this position, Dr. James Neff, will be making his research presentation on Monday, February 19th from 2:00-3:00pm in 145 CHHS (the new building).  His presentation is entitled “Organizational Structure and Culture in Faith-Based Substance Abuse Treatment: A Developing Research Program” and looks like it should be of interest to health and justice policy students in particular.  PPOL students are invited to attend this presentation.

3—Africa Lecture

The African Studies Academy is hosting a guest speaker to campus.  Dr. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, Chair of African-American Studies Department, Western Illinois University at Macomb, will speak on “Culture, Society, Politics and Islam in Africa” on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 2 p.m. in Denny 220. The lecture is free and open to all UNC Charlotte’s students, faculty, and staff and to the Charlotte community.

Dr. Na’Allah is an Associate Professor. He took a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He has two Master’s degrees in Literature and Linguistics respectively from the University of Ilorin in Nigeria where he also had his first degree.  Dr. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah specializes in African and African Diaspora performance, oral traditions, folklore, and literatures as well as Islam and oral performances and African and globalization. He is an established poet and performs his poetry across the country. In recent years, he has researched on oral Islamic traditions in Nigeria and is an authority on the scholarship of the Sokoto Caliphate. He has published creative and scholarly works.

For any questions about the lecture, please contact Drs. Beth Whitaker of Political Science (7-4527) or Tanure Ojaide of Africana Studies (7-2665).

4—Conference Announcement: ARNOVA

ARNOVA’s annual research conference in Atlanta, Georgia (November 15-17) will be an important opportunity to discuss the latest research on nonprofit organizations and philanthropy. The conference committee seeks proposals addressing the social justice theme, focusing on the entire sector or on specific nonprofit sub-sectors (health, education, social services, religion, arts, culture, and recreation).  ARNOVA's conference theme for 2007 is designed to explore this changing terrain of social justice and its relevance to modern societal challenges in an international as well as local and national framework. What are the roles and responsibilities of the nonprofit sector – or civil society more broadly – in this changing landscape? The conference will examine three

key sub-themes:

 Social Justice in a Globalizing World: How do the challenges of striving for social justice change in a world increasingly characterized by global flows of capital, growing disparities between the rich and the poor, and a decline in the welfare state?

 Social Justice & Philanthropy: What are the connections between the work and purposes of philanthropy and the achievement of social justice?

 Social Justice & Religion: What are the connections between religion and social justice in a world where faith-based groups play significant roles not only in social services, but also in political action?

In addition to addressing the conference theme, proposals may also focus on specific tracks including: public policy; philanthropy, foundations, and fundraising; voluntarism and volunteering; accountability and effectiveness; strategy, management, and operations; capacity building, training, and education; grassroots and community organizations; global and comparative challenges; boards, governance, and leadership; theory and methods; nonprofit

fields, programs and services; and social enterprise. Proposals do not have to specifically address the conference theme, but preference will be given to submissions connected to this theme.

Papers, panels of 3-4 papers, and colloquies of at least 3 presenters are solicited. Submissions by practitioners and doctoral students engaged in research are also welcome. The Conference Planning Committee seeks volunteers to chair or serve as discussants for paper sessions, and welcomes ideas for mini-plenary sessions.  The on-line proposal submission system will open February 26, 2007, and close at midnight, April 3. To submit a proposal, you will be able to go to www.arnova.org, and click on the tab that says “Submit a Proposal.” More instructions on submitting proposals will be sent out by

February 19th. Questions can then be directed to the ARNOVA office at (317) 684-2120, or to conference@arnova.org.
