artist biographies


sharon augustyniak , a senior at UNC Charlotte is studying for a BFA in Art History and Photography. Studying art and cultures all around the world has made Sharon more appreciative of the world around her and has opened her eyes to many new feelings and views of her life. She is influenced greatly by nature and people around her.


shea alexander uses photography as a tool for personal expression and examination. It allows him to see the unseen, to show beauty in the banal and mundane, and to sculpt with light to achieve a vision.


rick bardos is originally from Raleigh, NC and is a senior here at UNC Charlotte. He is an art major with concentrations in sculpture and ceramics. In the future, Rick plans to start his own business and create art in his studio.


carol caudle is currently a senior art and English major at UNC Charlotte. In December she will graduate with a BFA in illustration and a BA in English. Carol has always been interested in the relationship between image and text, and continues to explore this in her drawings and illustrations. In her spare time, Carol plans to travel the world, and play with her cat - Gemini.


mustafa capkan was born in Izmir Turkey in 1974. He came to Charlotte six years ago to go to architecture school at UNC Charlotte. He is planning to graduate in May 1999. Mustafa's interest in making objects and designing furniture has grown while studying here. He finds his inspiration through dedicating his works to his loved ones.


kasey duncan is a senior at UNC Charlotte with a BFA major in Illustration. She really likes the reproductive aspect of printmaking and the results that she achieved.


kendall dodgens is a senior art student at UNC Charlotte concentrating in ceramics and metals smithing. Her artwork always explores different aspects of nature. Kendall also enjoys incorporating different natural materials such as unusual sticks, leaves, and grasses into her pieces.


karl hoerz 's photographs attempt to capture that rare moment of time filled with beauty, the far-away place most people don't see first hand. Simply seeing these images, one travels there for a moment. Son of German immigrants, Karl grew up working for his parents, both small-business owners, instilling in him a working class ethos. His parents, eager to show him things beyond his horizon, traveled extensively. He has visited over 15 countries on four continents.


duy t. huynh will be graduating from UNC Charlotte at the end of the year with a BFA concentrating in Painting and Illustration. In his last semester, Duy has realized that art is not a career choice, but rather a lifestyle. As with any artist, he would gladly welcome fame and fortune from his work, but would continue to create regardless.


brett hillyer carries around technological gadgets to better record his surrondings. Riding Skateboards: that's how he moves around. Without his 95-a durometers, he's a slave to the paved world. Staeci's his best friend when he can't go out with his black ops crew. She's the greatest, 16 months in 13 days...life is sweet. Last words: family, friends, experience: best things life can offer. If you can't see the world, then listen to it. Keep believing. Date everything you write on - it may only happen once.


eric kagayutan is a 19 year old native of Michigan.


merica moynihan works with acrylics on found objects. She works and reworks the paint strokes trying to make the figures more painterly. She paints mostly nudes but is doing studies with heads and hands.


jeremy parker is a rising senior in the Art Department at UNC Charlotte. He is working towards his BFA with concentrations in both Painting and Drawing. Jeremy feels that no limits should be put on his art as far as medium, 2-D, 3-D, etc. Art has always been a profound part of Jeremy's life, and he finds his greatest joy and inspiration through art. After graduating from UNC Charlotte, he plans to attend Graduate school to further his art education and help reach the goal of becoming a professional artist.


leslie scott transferred to Charlotte from Athens, Georgia in the fall of 1997. The profusion of dark values and simple forms and subjects are the core of her work. Inspired by the mystery of the relationships of people to each other and to their surroundings, Leslie translates these ideas of time and nature into formal yet intimate images.


shari sellers is from Southbend, Indiana before she moved here twelve years ago. She works for Paramount Studios in the sculpture department and is also involved in mural paintings and tile design. She is a former rehab nurse who enjoys studying cellular biology and is very excited to be traveling to Italy in the near future.


cynthia m. sheets has produced art most of her life. She has always enjoyed drawing in pencil, and painting with both acrylic and water color (more recently with oils). Her subject matter has most often been that of animals and nature.
