Demonstration of the 
Bezold Effect
Click and drag the slider bar across the blue slider strip to view a set of same-color shapes as they change hue on both the black and the white maps of North Carolina.
Notice the difference in the apparent look of each color when placed against a black vs a white background. Contrast and apparent saturation of a hue tend to increase when placed against black and decrease when against white. The dark blue, and red in this example, however, look more dull against the black background. All other colors here appear brighter when surrounded by black.
