UNC Charlotte alumna Casey Rimland recently was named a Gates Cambridge Scholar and will begin study toward a doctorate in surgery at the University of Cambridge in the fall.
Rimland completed a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from the University in May 2012 and began medical school at UNC Chapel Hill as part of an eight-year scholarship through the National Institutes of Health Oxford Cambridge Scholars Program.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are prestigious, highly competitive full-cost scholarships that are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. There were established in 2000 by a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men author Michael Kimmel – considered by many to be the world’s leading researcher and author on men and masculinity – will visit UNC Charlotte on March 11 at 7:00 PM as part of the 2014 Women's and Gender Studies Guest Speaker Series. The talk will occur in McKnight Hall in Cone University Center and is free and open to the public.
“In today’s society, young men may find themselves adrift, as their transition to adulthood has been delayed,” said Lisa Walker, lecture committee member and chair of the sociology department. “Dr. Kimmel has interviewed over 400 young men nationwide, and offers guidance toward a more conscious adulthood.”
Dubbed a male feminist and known for his wit and candid critiques, Kimmel has been a featured guest on the TODAY show, to discuss Guyland, and other national news outlets.
