Faculty Jazz Quintet to Perform on Oct. 28

The Department of Music Faculty & Friends Concert Series will present the Faculty Jazz Quintet in a performance of the music of Horace Silver at 7:30 PM, Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Rowe Recital Hall. Tickets are $9 general admission, $7 seniors and UNC Charlotte faculty and staff and $6 for all students. The Rowe Galleries will be open one hour prior to the concert.

Pianist Horace Silver (1928-2014) began his career with Stan Getz. He then played with luminaries such as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. In the early 1950s, he joined drummer Art Blakey to form the Jazz Messengers and was a key figure in the development of hard bop. Silver formed his own quintet in the late ‘50s and wrote a number of pieces that have become jazz standards. The Oct. 28 program will include "The Jody Grind," "Nica's Dream" and "Summer in Central Park," among others.

The Faculty Jazz Quintet features Will Campbell (saxophone), Michael Hackett (trumpet), Noel Freidline (piano), Ron Brendle (bass) and Rick Dior (percussion).
