Use
of Copyrighted Materials in Teaching
Faculty members are reminded that copyright
protection extends to literary works, musical works (including any accompanying
words), pantomimes, choreography works, pictorial, graphic and sculptural works,
architectural works, motion pictures and other audiovisual works, and sound
recordings. Specific do’s and don’ts regarding classroom use of copyrighted
materials are detailed in a document prepared by the library staff entitled, Guide
to the New Copyright Law, effective January 1, 1978. This document should be
on file in each department office and copies are available in the administrative
offices of the library. The Office of the University Attorney, (515-A Reese,
704-687-2553) will provide advice on specific copyright questions. That office
can also provide samples of copyright permission requests and formal
applications to the U.S. Copyright Office for copyright registration. Additional
information about copyright law and fair use in the educational setting is
available online at www.uncc.edu/unccatty/copylaw.html.
