Classroom
Civility
Both the faculty member and
the student should expect the classroom environment to be one that encourages
open discussion and is free from rude, belligerent or disruptive behavior. The
ability to balance openness and rude or disruptive behavior can be difficult. A
document prepared by the Office of the University Attorney (515-A Reese,
704-687-2553) titled, "Civility in the Classroom: Practical Advice for
Faculty Members" contains a number of useful ideas on how to maintain the
level of classroom civility that protects academic freedom while discouraging
rude or inappropriate behavior. This document can be found at www.uncc.edu/unccatty/civility.html.
