Academies

In an effort to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, research, and public service, the University has established a plan for the creation of academies. Academies are interdisciplinary groupings of scholars, more flexible and transitory than academic departments, yet capable of responding to shorter term needs. Academies, which may borrow personnel from academic units, can bring together various experts both within and outside the University, serve as incubators of new ideas, address particular problems, and then disband when the job has been completed without altering departmental structures. In the event that any academy is needed on a more long-term basis, it is possible that it could relinquish its academy status and become a permanent part of the University structure. The official University policy, Policy Statement #86, “Academies,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-86.html.
