Selecting Textbooks and Educational Materials

It is University policy that the instructor of any course has the responsibility to select the textbook and/or educational materials specified for formal use in teaching the course. The official University policies, Policy Statement #76, “Textbook and Educational Material Adoption” and Policy Statement #103, “Preparation and Sale of Instructional Materials,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-76.html and www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-103.html, respectively. The primary criteria for selection are (1) suitability of materials for the course, and (2) quality of the materials for the purpose. It is recommended that cost to students also be a consideration.

This general policy applies in all cases with the following exceptions:

  1. departmental courses and interdisciplinary courses where it is determined that alternative policy for selecting materials better serves the needs and goals of the course; and
  2. cases of potential monetary conflict of interest resulting from the selection of materials (such as the instructor receiving royalties from the sale of a select textbook) in which case the instructor must notify the chairperson and an appropriate departmental committee must consider the matter. The official University policy, Policy Statement #76, “Textbook and Educational Material Adoption,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-76.html.
