Compensation
Compensation for Professional Services to
the University. There are limits to the amount
of compensation the University can pay to a faculty member during the period of
appointment each year. In general, the salary approved by the board of governors
for the year is the full compensation to be expected and no additional payments
may be made for University duties related to the position to which the
individual is appointed. Engaging in other tasks during the appointment year
requires a reduction in other planned activities. For example, arrangements are
to be made for release time if faculty members are to conduct contract or grant
activity during the regular term. Exceptions may be made for teaching one
extension course per semester and for teaching non-credit short courses or
workshops through the Office of Continuing Education, Distance
Education/Extension, and Summer Programs (207 King, 704-687-2424). In addition,
faculty members may receive additional compensation for taking on additional
responsibilities such as rotating or interim administrative assignments.
During the summer, nine-month faculty appointees can earn up to one-third of their nine-month salary for continuing education and extension activities, teaching summer school, and for research and curriculum development activities. Such work is paid at the nine-month salary rate or less. The official University policy, Policy Statement #99, “Supplemental and Summer Compensation for Professional Services to the University,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-99.html.
Determination of
Faculty Salaries. Salary
funds are allocated by the Office of Academic Affairs to each college. The dean
of the colleges allocates the money to the various departments. The allocation
of merit increases is based primarily on the recommendations of department
chairpersons developed within the guidelines provided by the Dean's Office and
the Office of Academic Affairs.
Salary performance reviews are conducted for
all faculty members for use in determination of salary adjustments and
consistent with the Tenure Policies. The UNC Charlotte Tenure
Policies, Regulations, and Procedures can be found at www.uncc.edu/unccatty/tenurepol.html.
Salary Advances. The University does not make advances against anticipated salary. The official University policy, Policy Statement #3, “Salary Advances,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-3.html.
Salary Payments. Faculty salaries are paid in semi-monthly installments beginning on the 15th of July. Newly appointed faculty members normally are paid accumulative wages on August 31. Salary checks are available for pick-up in the department or college office on the 15th and on the last working day of each month. Faculty may also choose to have salaries deposited directly to area banks or a credit union. This direct deposit plan guarantees that the salary will be available at the start of business on payday.
