Consulting
The UNC Board of Governors and the UNC Charlotte Board of
Trustees have issued a policy statement regarding external professional
activities. The official University policy, Policy Statement #1, “External
Professional Activities of Faculty and Other Professional Staff Exempt from the
State Personnel Act,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-1.html.
Activities subject to the policy include external
consultation and other external services for pay. If a faculty member intends to
participate in external professional activities for pay, he or she must file a
"Notice of Intent" (http://www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-1A.doc)
with his or her department chairperson or dean at least ten calendar days before
the date the proposed activity is to begin. The department chairperson or dean
then determines within ten days if the activity is consistent with the policy,
that is, the activity does not:
(a) interfere with timely and effective completion of all University responsibilities;
(b) create a conflict of interest with the individual's University duties and responsibilities;
(c) involve inappropriate use of facilities, equipment, personnel, or other resources of the University;
(d) make any use of the name of the University for any purpose other than professional identification;
(e) claim University responsibility for the conduct or outcome of the activity.
