Class Attendance

Students: Students who miss class are responsible for the work missed. Instructors are not required to give make-up tests but they are encouraged not to penalize students who are asked to represent the University at events that conflict with class attendance. Undergraduate students are cautioned that they may not be able to receive favorable evaluations unless they attend at least 75% of the total class hours.

Faculty: Faculty members are expected to meet their regularly scheduled classes. In the case of illness or emergency, if a faculty member is unable to meet a class, the department chairperson or dean should be notified immediately so that appropriate arrangements to cover the class can be made. In the case of anticipated absences, faculty members should make their own appropriate arrangements for their classes and should inform the department chairperson or dean of the arrangements.

Inclement Weather: In the event of hazardous weather, students and faculty are expected to observe normal schedules unless the University is closed. The official University policy, Policy Statement #13, “Campus Operation in Hazardous Weather or During Other Unusual Conditions,” can be found at www.legal.uncc.edu/policies/ps-13.html. When the chancellor (or his designate) closes the University, there will be public announcements of the closing made with the cooperation of radio stations including WBT (AM 1110), WFAE (FM 90.7), and WSOC (FM 103.7), and television stations WBTV (Channel 3), WCNC (Channel 36), WSOC (Channel 9), and WCCB (Channel 18).

Inquiries regarding the status of campus weather conditions can be made at 704-547-2877.

If the University is not closed, but a faculty member or student determines that observing his or her normal schedule would require hazardous travel and acts on that determination, then,

(a)     students who miss class for that reason will be allowed to make up the work missed;

(b)     faculty members shall immediately notify their department chairpersons so arrangements can be made for their classes;

(c)     twelve-month faculty members shall notify their supervisors and charge time lost to annual leave.
