Academic Program and Curriculum Development

Academic Program Development Procedures

The policies and procedures for planning and establishing new academic degree programs are described in Academic Program Development Procedures published by the Office of the President of the University of North Carolina. This document identifies the types of instructional development (e.g., new degree programs and new degree programs tracks) that require approval beyond the campus level and provides formats for preparation of proposals and instructions for their submission. Copies of this document are available in department and college offices, the Office of Academic Affairs (Fifth Floor Reese, 704-687-2224), and at the following web site: www.northcarolina.edu/docs/aa/reports/plan_intent/Mem406.pdf.

Course and Curriculum Development Procedures

The faculty has policy-making responsibility and authority for "establishing curricula and developing and reviewing proposed new programs" (Article III, Section 3A of the Constitution of the Faculty - www.uncc.edu/academic_affairs/Constitution.htm). The procedures for review and approval of course and curriculum proposals beyond the department and college levels are described in the Standing Rules of the Faculty Council. The web site for the Standing Rules of the Faculty can be found at www.uncc.edu/academic_affairs/Standing Rules.htm. Undergraduate course and curriculum proposals are considered by the faculty course and curriculum committee, and graduate courses and curriculum proposals are reviewed by the graduate council.  The General Education Faculty Committee is responsible for the General Education Program.  This committee sets policy and is responsible for maintaining the academic standards of the program, for assessing its effectiveness, and for making recommendations for changes to improve the program.  Copies of "Procedures for Processing Course and Curriculum Proposals," "Format for Course and Curriculum Proposals," and "Guidelines and Procedures for Submitting Proposals to the Council on General Education" are available in department and college offices, and from the faculty governance secretary in the Office of Academic Affairs.
