Post-Baccalaureate Admission

Why Enroll as a Post-Bac Student?

  • To pursue postgraduate studies for professional or personal enrichment.

  • To take courses as prerequisites for admission to a graduate degree or certificate program at UNC Charlotte.

  • To take courses at UNC Charlotte for transfer to a graduate program at another college or university.

  • To obtain or renew a professional license.

  • To obtain or renew teacher licensure

Important Notice for Post-Baccalaureate Students:

Please be aware that admission as a post-bac student does not guarantee registration access to specific courses since some courses may require prerequisites, be closed, or are only available to students already admitted to particular programs of study.

To accommodate degree-seeking students, some academic departments only allow students already admitted to degree programs to enroll in their courses.  Occasionally, however, post-bac students may be issued a 'permit' (by the academic unit) to register for restricted courses if they meet all necessary prerequisites and have written permission from the course instructor and/or department chairperson.

Prospective students should contact the academic department for information or advising prior to applying for admission as a non-degree, post-baccalaureate student.

Admission Requirements

This application is intended for United States citizens or permanent residents who have completed an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

To Apply for Admission

  • Complete the Post-Baccalaureate Admissions Application and return it along with a nonrefundable nor deductible $55.00 application fee (drawn against a U.S. bank) to:

           Office of Graduate Admissions
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte
           9201 University City Boulevard
           Charlotte, North Carolina  28223-0001

  • Shortly after receipt of your application and fee, you will receive a letter from the Office of Graduate Admissions regarding your admission as a post-bac student.  Generally, post-bac applications are processed within 5 business days.

Course Offerings and Academic Advising

  • Post-bac students may register for course work at any level for which they have satisfied the prerequisites and that is not restricted to degree majors only.

  • Post-bacs do not have a home department, with the exception of post-bacs who are seeking state licensure related to K-12 teaching, administration, or counseling.

  • If you are in the K-12 licensure group, you should contact the College of Education's Teacher Education Advising and Licensure office at 704.687.2508 (if you haven't already done so) to apply for the teacher licensure program and to request a transcript evaluation.

  • Other post-bac students should feel free to contact the graduate coordinators/directors of the various academic programs, if applicable, or department chairs or faculty if you have questions about specific courses.

Registering for Classes

  • Once admitted, you will use your UNC Charlotte ID Number to register online using the 49er Express.

  • The 49er Express can be used to determine individual registration appointment times and register for classes.

  • As you register, please remember that the needs of the University's regular degree-seeking students generally take precedence over the needs of post-bac students; therefore, registration to some courses may be restricted to degree-seeking students only.

  • Some courses, particularly graduate courses, are designed for majors only.  If you have the appropriate prerequisites, it is occasionally possible, on a case by case basis, for graduate coordinators/directors or department chairs to grant admittance to restricted classes that are not full.  This is arranged between you and the department; remember to get permission in writing.

Transfer Credit

  • A post-bac student who is subsequently admitted to a graduate degree or certificate program may transfer a maximum of six graduate credit hours to his or her program.  All course work must be approved by the student's department and listed on the student's Admission to Candidacy form.

  • The post-bac classification carries with it no implication that a student will be admitted to a degree program.

Tuition and Fees

Post-bac students will be assessed tuition and fees at the graduate level for all courses, regardless if they are graduate or undergraduate.

Financial Aid

Post-bac students are not eligible to receive financial aid.

Academic Integrity & Student Responsibility

Post-bac students are subject to the academic regulations and standards required of degree-seeking graduate or undergraduate students.  All UNC Charlotte students are obligated to be familiar with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Code of Student Academic Integrity, Code of Student Responsibility, and all University policies governing student conduct (see the University Regulation of Student Conduct section of the Graduate Catalog).

Immunizations

Students attending any state university in North Carolina are required, by state law, to provide documentation certifying that they have met specific immunization requirements.
