Graduate Student Tuition Support
A number of support mechanisms are available for graduate students at UNC Charlotte, including teaching assistantships (TAs), research assistantships (RAs), and fellowships. In some cases these awards provide tuition support as well. The Graduate School has a limited source of state appropriated funds that can be used to provide tuition support in two ways:

1. Eligible out-of-state students may receive a non-resident tuition differential award that is applied to the difference between resident and non-resident tuition each semester for graduate students serving as University-supported TAs, RAs, or fellow/trainees. This benefit includes tuition only, not student fees.

Eligibility Requirements
The following eligibility criteria apply to non-resident tuition differential awards:

Degree Intent: Students must be fully enrolled, degree-seeking, on-campus graduate students.

Assistantship: Students must hold an assistantship that receives a minimum stipend level of $2,000 for the academic year.

Appointment: Students must be appointed by the Graduate School as a Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, Administrative Assistant or hold an appropriate Fellowship.

Enrollment Requirements: Non-resident tuition differential awards can be applied toward graduate credit only but not for “personal-enrichment” courses. While holding a non-resident tuition differential award, full-time enrollment is considered to be 6 graduate credit hours or more, except when there are less than 6 hours remaining to complete the degree. Non-resident tuition differential awards are not available for summer enrollment.

Nominations
Students must be nominated for this award by their Graduate Program Director. Since funding is limited some awards may only provide partial support and not every eligible student may receive a non-resident tuition differential award. Please contact your Graduate Program Director for details.

Deadlines
Appointment Deadline: Students must be appointed to their positions no later than the first day of classes for the relevant semester.

Registration Deadline: All eligible students must be registered no later than the last day to register/add classes as indicated in the Schedule of Classes.

2. Eligible in-state students may receive an in-state tuition award. This benefit includes tuition only, not student fees.

Eligibility Requirements
The following eligibility criteria apply to in-state tuition awards:

Degree Intent: Students must be enrolled, degree-seeking, on campus graduate students

Enrollment Requirements: There is no minimum enrollment. In-state tuition awards are  not available for summer enrollment.

Nominations
Students must be nominated for this award by their graduate program. Since funding is limited some awards may provide only partial support and not every eligible student may receive an in-state tuition grant. Please contact your Graduate Program Director for details.

Graduate Assistant Support Plan
The Graduate Assistant Support Plan is a highly competitive multi-year support package used to attract and retain  top quality doctoral students to UNC Charlotte. Students enrolled in this plan are eligible to receive full payment of in-state tuition, non-resident tuition (if required), and health insurance.

To be eligible a student must be a doctoral student who holds a graduate assistantship or appropriate fellowship and must be enrolled full-time (at least 9 credit hours) for each term of support.

Nominations
Students must be nominated for this award by their graduate program. Since this is a very competitive financial support plan not every eligible student may be enrolled. Please contact your Graduate Program Director for details.

Departmental Awards

Teaching and Research Assistantships
The majority of graduate, research, and teaching assistantships available to graduate students are awarded by academic departments. Graduate assistantships are also available through the University's various administrative offices, institutes and centers. Stipends, responsibilities, selection criteria, application and notification procedures vary from department to department. Enrolled students should discuss with their own department the specific opportunities that may be available through teaching and research service to the department.

Federal/State Fellowships and Traineeships
A few state and federally funded fellowships and traineeships are also available in some departments. Students must be pursuing graduate training in specified fields of study to be eligible for these awards. Interested students should request additional information from their academic departments.

Application Deadline
Currently enrolled students should consult their departments for deadlines for new applications and assistantship renewals.
