The
Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) uses the College Foundation, Inc. (CFI),
a state-affiliated institution, as its primary lender because of their benefits
offered to borrowers and the services provided to students. CFI has a long
history of providing students enrolled in North Carolina’s colleges and
universities with loans and has been the central lender in the state since
1955. For a comprehensive listing of CFI’s borrower benefits as well as
comparison charts, please click

Students do have the
option of selecting a different lender, and if so, OSFA will promptly certify
their loans.
Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized
Student Loans
Regardless of the result of the FAFSA (i.e. whether or not you have financial
need as determined by the federal government), any degree-seeking student who is
a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen may be eligible to receive a federal
student loan. For students with financial need determined by the FAFSA, the
loan is subsidized, which means the federal government will pay the interest
while you are in school. Students who do not have financial need may borrow an
unsubsidized loan. For these loans, the student is responsible for the interest
while in school.
Your
financial aid award information will state whether your loan is subsidized,
unsubsidized, or a combination of both. You may then simply accept the loans
on-line via Banner Self-Service. For first-time borrowers, you will be mailed a
master promissory note to finalize the process and also given instructions for
completing on-line loan counseling. For continuing borrowers, upon award
acceptance, your loans will be certified with your previous borrower.

Parent
Loans
In addition to student loans, parent loans are available. Parents of
dependent students may borrow through the Federal PLUS Loan any amount
up to the cost of attendance minus any financial aid received by the
student. The interest rate is variable, and is set at a maximum of 8.5
percent. Repayment begins after the loan is disbursed, and can take up to 10
years.
For more detailed information and application materials, go to
Federal PLUS Request Form, or contact the UNC Charlotte
Office of Student Financial Aid.
Payment Plans
The University offers several
different payment plans through an arrangement with Academic Management Services
(AMS). In summary,
the amount needed by the family can be paid over a ten-month period to
cover a full academic year. Payments must begin in June prior to
the beginning of that academic year in August. A five-month plan
for one semester is also available. Payment plans carry no
interest, and include a small processing fee.
Details can be
obtained by

Alternative Loans
Non-federal loans may be available to students who do not qualify for
federal student loans or to those who need additional loan assistance
beyond the federal loan maximums. Links to several of the more
frequently used alternative loans are provided below.
The amount
of an alternative educational loan is normally limited to the schools
estimated total cost of attendance minus scholarships, grants, and other
loans received by the student.
