Our Mission
The Counseling Center at the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte supports the academic, personal, and interpersonal
development of UNC Charlotte students by providing short-term
individual and group counseling, psychiatric assessment and
medication management, consultation for faculty, staff,
parents, and students, and educational programs to the campus
community.
Consistent with the academic mission of the University, the Center
serves as a training site for graduate students in psychology and
counseling and encourages and supports scholarly activity and
professional development of staff.
Individual
Counseling
The UNC Charlotte Counseling Center
offers
individual counseling to assist students with concerns of a
personal nature by helping them develop better coping strategies,
resolve conflicts and handle crisis situations. Typical concerns are
depression, anxiety and stress, relationship issues, identity
development, substance use problems, eating and body image issues.
Group
Counseling
Each semester, the
Counseling Center offers various
group
counseling opportunities designed to help students enhance
personal growth and development, increase effectiveness, explore
interpersonal issues, and address concerns unique to their
environment. Come by Atkins 158 or call 704.687.2105 to sign
up.
Psychological Consultation
In addition to
providing personal and group counseling services, the Counseling
Center provides
consultation services to faculty, staff,
parents, and students. Services available in
this area include:
- Workshops and
seminars designed to enhance faculty effectiveness in responding
to
student psychological concerns.
- One-on-one consultation with
faculty and staff members concerning ways to
respond to student problems.
- Dissemination of
information about campus and community resources and referral
procedures.
- Response to
special needs of students at times of situational concerns or
campus crises.
Psychiatry
A staff psychiatrist is
available through the Student Health Center to assess
whether medication may be helpful in addressing the student's
concern or for follow-up on previously prescribed medications.
The psychiatrist will write prescriptions when
appropriate and follow-up with students to make adjustments to
medications as necessary.
Students who wish to
consult with our psychiatrist should contact the Student Health
Center directly at 704-687-4617. Students can also
discuss a referral to psychiatry with a counselor at the Counseling
Center.
Outreach
Counseling Center
staff members are available to make
presentations to classes, student organizations, leadership
workshops, academic departmental meetings, and other groups on a
variety of topics such as managing stress, adjusting to college,
wellness. Please contact the Center at 704.687.2105 to request
a presentation.
Training
The Counseling Center
serves as a training site, providing APA-accredited
predoctoral internships
and placements for
master's-level students
in both counseling and psychology programs.
