GEOG 1105 Course Policies

Spring 2004

1) I understand that the goal of the course is for students to understand how geographic systems work – this knowledge cannot be gained from the memorization of facts alone.

2) I understand that the tests in this class are difficult (historically the average grade has been around 68%). I understand that performing well on the tests requires an understanding of the concepts discussed in class as well as the ability to apply those concepts in new contexts (this requires a greater depth of knowledge than memorization provides).

3) I understand that grades will be curved up at the end of the semester to make the average course grade 75%. After the curve, grades will be allocated on the following basis: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D. (grades will not be curved down).

4) I understand that the tests are based exclusively on the material discussed in the course lectures and in the supplementary readings which are provided in class. I understand that missing class and/or having an incomplete set of notes will negatively impact my grade.

5) I understand that makeup exams are not given without prior consent of the instructor (i.e. you need to discuss the alternative time for your makeup exam with the instructor before the scheduled exam date). I also understand that any makeup exam given after the regularly scheduled test date is essay format.

6) I understand that the instructor must treat everyone equally, therefore he cannot change my grade or provide opportunities for extra credit.

7) I understand that the textbook is intended to clarify the lecture material. Material in the textbook that is not discussed in class will not be on any exam. I also understand that there is some material covered in class (and on exams) that is not in the textbook.

8) I understand that the lecture outlines provided on the web site are there only to help me take notes during class. Since these are only outlines they are not sufficient to replace lecture notes (see #3).

9) I understand that the instructor provides information about exams in every class. Because of this, no organized review sessions are offered but I am always free to ask the instructor questions.

10) I understand that it is my responsibility to attend every scheduled class and that the instructor cannot reproduce lectures or lecture notes from missed classes. (But the instructor is always available to answer specific questions about course material).

11) I understand that plagiarism (borrowing the ideas contained in the work of others without proper attribution) on course assignments will result in a failing grade for the course.

12) I understand that the instructor is here to help me. I understand that it is my responsibility to ask the instructor when I do not have a clear and thorough understanding of the course material. I understand that the instructor is available to answer questions before, during or after class. I understand that the instructor can answer brief questions by email but more elaborate questions need to be asked in person. I understand that the instructor is available in his office in room 430 McEniry Hall any time his door is open.
