Pandemic Influenza

Implications for UNC Charlotte

General.  The best means to prevent or slow the spread of a virus by human-to-human transmission is to separate people from each other.  UNC Charlotte will take actions to do this to the maximum extent possible.  The following measures will be enacted to protect the life, safety and health of students, faculty and staff of the University.

Preparation and Preventive Measures.  In the event that the World Health Organization raises their Pandemic level to Phase 4 and Phase 5, the University will begin to implement measures to alert the University community and to step up preventive measures.  These will include:

  • Increased public service announcements on means of personal protection.
  • Increased surveillance and monitoring of students, faculty and staff, particularly those returning from travel abroad.
  • Fit testing and issue of Personal Protective Equipment to essential employees.
  • Daily reporting of absentees from class and/or work.
  • Restrictions on travel abroad for students, faculty and staff.

University Closure.   In the event of a pandemic event (Phase 6), UNC Charlotte will probably be forced to suspend classes and close the campus.  The point at which closure will be implemented is dependent on the proximity and rate of spread of the virus.

   a.  During this period resident students will be required to return to their homes, if at all possible.  Some exceptions may be:

  • International students or other students with homes abroad.
  • Students whose homes are at a distance greater than 1000 miles and public transportation systems are shut down (airline, train, bus).

  • Students whose homes are located in current pandemic “hot spots”.

    b.  Only designated employees - those whose presence is required on campus to maintain or operate critical processes - will be allowed on campus.

  • Other employees who can operate or maintain critical processes from home, will do so.

  • Some critical processes will be suspended until the University reopens.  Employees responsible for these processes may be called on to perform other duties when those with primary responsibility are unable to do so.

c.  The University will not reopen for normal operations until given approval by the Mecklenburg County Medical Office.
