East entrance to the academic campus Visiting Student Requirements

Visiting students are those students who are enrolled at other colleges and universities and have written permission from their institutions to take specific courses at the University in a given semester.

Visiting students register on a space-available basis after UNC Charlotte degree-seeking students. Visiting students must reapply every semester, pay a new application fee, and submit a new transient study form each semester.

A transient study form must be obtained from your home university or college. It will list the courses you plan to take at UNC Charlotte and will contain appropriate signatures from a departmental chairperson or academic dean at your home university/college. A letter of permission is not a sufficient transient study form and will not meet the requirement for permission to enroll.

Fall/spring enrollment:

If you wish to be a visiting student for the fall or spring semester, you must complete the visitor application and submit the fee online. Enrollment at the university usually reaches capacity during the fall and spring semesters, so these terms are NOT considered open enrollment. Therefore, you must submit a transient study form from your home university detailing what courses you plan to take at UNC Charlotte.

Summer enrollment:

If you wish to be a visiting student for the summer term(s), you do NOT need to submit a transient study form. You only have to complete the application and submit the application fee online.

Please Note:

  1. The application fee must be paid for each term for which you apply. The application fee is a processing fee and will NOT be refunded if the classes you wish to take are full.
  2. Transcripts are not required unless you want to take a course that requires a pre-requisite. In that case, you will need to supply the academic department with a transcript proving that you have completed the pre-requisite course.
  3. Students enrolled in high school or under 18 years of age who want to take summer courses should NOT complete the visitor's application. Please contact our office for the appropriate application.
  4. Students who already hold a first bachelor's degree are not eligible to enroll as visiting students at the University. Your options for pursuing studies at UNC Charlotte include earning a second bachelor's degree or taking courses as a post-baccalaureate student from the Graduate School.
