CRS Program Accepting Applications

The Charlotte Research Scholars (CRS) program, a summer experience for high-achieving students, is accepting applications for summer 2016.

This annual program, which began in 2012, is designed to provide participants with research experience and professional development in their fields of interest. CRS will provide funding to more than 50 UNC Charlotte rising seniors to participate in the 10-week program. Scholars receive one-on-one, faculty-guided research training and participate in weekly professional development sessions to better prepare them for graduate school and a future research career.

Rising seniors in all academic disciplines are eligible to apply; the deadline is Friday, Feb. 19. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and a demonstrated desire to do independent research. Scholars will receive a $4,000 fellowship for participation in the program.

Sport Clubs Win Statewide Canned Food Drive

UNC Charlotte’s Sport Clubs program was the overall winner of the inaugural First in Flight Fight Against Hunger, a statewide canned food drive competition. All of the goods brought in by UNC Charlotte’s sport clubs were donated to the Niner Food Pantry, which provides assistance for undergraduate and graduate students who struggle with food insecurity.

For this food drive, 898 student-athletes from campus collected 2,200 pounds of canned food. Approximately 7,150 pounds of canned food was collected by the 11 collegiate sport clubs programs that participated.

"I am extremely proud of our sport club athletes for winning the inaugural First in Flight Fight Against Hunger and showing the other sport club programs across the state what it means to be a part of Niner Nation," said Max Mello, assistant director for sport clubs in the Recreational Services Department. "With these donations, we were able to make a significant impact in our campus community and help those less fortunate during the holidays."
