Foxx Kicks Off Tour of Light Rail on Campus

Greeted by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx kicked off a tour of development along the LYNX Blue Line Extension during a stop at the UNC Charlotte Main Station on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The purpose of the tour is to highlight investment along the light rail line and to portray mass transit as a key strategy to increase accessibility and to reduce poverty and segregation.

When the main UNC Charlotte campus was being developed in the 1960s, Dubois said, no one thought it was essential for the University to be closely connected to the city. "This has all changed," he said. "We know now that you need to be part of the fabric of the community you serve. We have taken many steps to ensure we are more closely linked."

October Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month

During the month of October, UNC Charlotte will hold events to raise awareness about issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault and to promote healthy relationships.

Through Thursday, Oct. 6, participants can paint their nails purple, the official color of domestic violence awareness month, and learn how to identify an unhealthy relationship at an information table located at Prospector. On Thursday, Oct. 13, Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority Inc. will host "Help Carry the Weight," a demonstration modeled after the activism and art of Emma Sulkowicz. In 2012, after a violent sexual encounter, Sulkowicz, then a student at Columbia University, carried her dorm mattress around campus in response to the university’s failure to acknowledge her assault.
